Star Spanglish Banner

"I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English, and I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English."

-President Bush...

Because why? Because English is our "National Language"? Oops, we don't have one. Because Spanish is not a very populous 2nd language in America? (Is 12-13% a lot of people?)

Because Plato came down and said so- "I deem English as the FORM of language in the U.S."?

Because it's not a free country, and we get to dictate what languages people can speak?

Oh, I know why.... because we want to ostracize foreigners and take away reasons for them to love the United States.

Who is it that Spanish speakers owe it to to learn English, and when did they incur this lingual debt?

Luke

p.s. NOT THAT IT WOULD BE EASY TO TRANSLATE WITHOUT RUINING IT... it was just the "to be an American, you have to speak English" part that bothered me. Maybe people should have to buy jeans at the GAP too, and like apple pie in order to get in.

"Yup. We're here. We are the ones called by many names: redneck, backwoods, biker trash, trailer trash, hillbilly, cowboy, hick, tex, trucker, good ol' boy, beer drinkers & hell raisers, etc, etc, etc. We are the descendents of those who fought this mexican invasion once before. Our family's blood was spilled from Goliad to San Jacinto. While the politicians debate endlessly, the lawless illegals and their conspirators attempt to wedge themselves into place. We are the ones to stop this. We are ready. ------ We are the Texas Independence Revolution. And we don't play fair." From : Americans For Legal Immigration

MUST READ

My informant, Casey, made me aware of this paper:

Within the Bounds of Orthodoxy by Joseph Minich.

The paper is written to call people in the reformed world to peace by examining the question of whether New Perspectives and Federal Vision are acceptable as opposed to whether the views are correct.

This paper is endosed by John Frame and Steve Wilkins. It is elegantly written and clear. It will, in my guess, be important in helping the PCA to find comfort with itself.

Feast of Saint Mark

Happy St. Mark's day!

---And he said, 'The Kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.'

Mark 4.26-29 (material unique to Mark)

Baptism

Just thought I would post the old pictures of Anastasia's baptism last summer.

Click on the word baptism above or go to:

Don't be fooled by how much hair she had, she was only a few weeks old.

Don't be fooled by how much fat it looks like I have, I was actually only the size of a beluga whale.

Home again, home again, jiggidy-jig

Tonight at 12.30 am, we will get to the airport to go home. This 11 day trip has been exhausting. My dad is at home- we'll see how that goes. I am teaching tomorrow - we'll see how that goes.

My dad's creatinine levels continue to drop closer to normal. This is good. Please pray more!

les reins

My dad's kidneys are apparently getting a little better. This is crucial right now. Please don't stop praying. Especially the following:

PRAY

- that Don's kidneys will be fully healed

- that the chemo dosage may therefore be raised to 100%

- that the aggressive tumors would aggressively suck up the poison

- that God would glorify himself through restoration of Don's body.

Amen and Goodnight.

Heath - Soren's Song

Heath, Here are the lyrics to the Switchfoot song "Sooner or Later (Soren's Song)". I think they actually get at what you said about the Leap being about willingness to abandon oneself to the truth that will overtake you.

THE LYRICS:

Come back and haunt me
Follow me home
Give me a motive
Swallow me whole

They say I've lost it
What could I know
When I'm but a mockery
I'm so alone

Sooner or later you'll find out
There's a hole in the wall

Today is ours
Condemned to be free
Free to keep breathing
Free to believe

I look to find You
Down on my knees
Oh God, I believe!
Please help me believe

Sooner or later they'll find out
There's a hole in the wall
Sooner or later you'll find out
That you'll dream to be that small

I'm a believer, help me believe

I gave it all away and I lost who I am
I threw it all away
With everything to gain
And I'm taking the leap
With dreams of shrinking
Yeah, dreams of shrinking

Between the Ages

As I have been reading Richard Hays' The Moral Vision of the New Testament, I have enjoyed a couple of things at the outset:

1) Emphasis that Paul did not use the expectation of the end of the age to avoid formulating a specifically Christian ethic. If you read the pauline corpus, you find the mentionings of the returned presence of Jesus, and of the resurrection as calls to faithfully be part of the new covenant people now. That is, If we are going to see the fulfilled new heavens and new earth, then we should live like new creation today.

My hunch is that Paul will go back to prophetic literature especially to see the characteristics of new kingdom citizens.

But I have to read on both in Paul and in Hays.

2) A quote:

"If the church manifests the righteousness of God, it does so in just the way Jesus did: through suffering and death for the sake of others."

Kidneys and Chemo

Hey all,

My dad's chemotherapy will begin today at 2-3pm Central time. Please pray for full benefit to work. Actually pray for miraculous healing too. His kidneys are no worse than before, and they are only doing 75% chemo so as not to immediately damage his kidneys further.

We ask for blessing
for the glory of God the Father,
in the victory of King Jesus,
by the power of the Spirit - the Lord, the Giver of Life.

Amen

My Father's Cancer

We are in Texas now at Easter break, and we are dealing with hard stuff.

My father had CAT and PET scans done last Friday (April 7).

This Monday (Apr 10) he had a portocath put in (an under the skin device that allows chemo injections to go directly into his vena cava.

When they did the surgery they found a lot of fluid in his lungs; immediately they admitted him. They began to drain one side of his lungs and got 1.5 liters of fluid (I like to think of that as 4 1/2 Coke cans worth) - and that was just from one side.

He had a brain scan yesterday too.

The oncologist spoke with us and explained that since his colon cancer surgery (a month ago), the tumors in his Lymph system have been aggressive in surprising strength. They are immediately trying to begin his chemo, but his kidneys are not working properly right now, possibly due to the chemicals used for his scans. His kidneys have to go back to helping or else they will have to put in stints or put him on temporary dialysis.

The chemo will also be aggressive and will possibly damage his kidneys further; it is a known risk.

Please stop right now long enough to at least read these short prayers to God:

1- that Don's Kidneys will be restored
2- that his chemo will work aggressively without damaging his kidneys
3- that he has proper rest and nutrition
4- that he survives this cancer

Thanks for your time, love and prayers.
